I found this cool little trip report at The Outdoor Lodge by Michael Lindquist. This guy is more adventurous than I am.
General
Jeff Sundin has an excellent article on Minnesota Northern Pike fishing on his web site. Jeff starts out the article by discussing the current myths about the state of Minnesota pike fishing. Throughout the article he points out the importance in finding the best pike lakes. You are not going to consistently catch big pike unless your fishing on big pike lakes. While I have not fished Minnesota, I have found this true in Ontario. Many fishermen take a trip to Ontario expecting every lake to be like the fishing shows with numbers of huge pike. This simply isn’t true. It takes a combination of features for a lake to be a consistent producer of big pike.
Jeff’s article will help you in trying to plan a trip for big Northerns. Read it carefully and then use it to ask well educated questions to the lodge or guide that you are thinking about paying for your chance at a trophy. Most lodges will have the one or two monster pike that they catch per year on the cover of their brochure but don’t show you 99% of the pike that they catch which fail to break the 30″ mark.

The guide service, Minnesota Fishing Pros has a page with an overview of some of the top lakes to fish in Minnesota. The information on each lake should be really helpful for anyone trying to decide which Minnesota lake to fish on their next trip. Upper Red Lake
Very interesting article in the Minnesota Star Tribune on Upper Red Lake crappie. People travel from far and wide to fish for some of this lake’s crappie. The fish are big and plentiful.
Lake Winnibigoshish
One of my favorite tackle companies, Northland Tackle, has an article on walleye fishing Lake Winnie by Travis Peterson. Obviously the article promotes their products. Even if you don’t use their products (which you should, and I am not paid to say that), the information will be helpful for fishing on one of Minnesota’s premier walleye lakes. Travis explains why Lake Winnie is a popular lake and covers proper baits and tackle and a few other tips to make your next early season walleye trip to Winnie a success.
