Florida Freshwater Fishing Articles

General

  • TBO.com has an article about Florida’s new Bass Conservation Center located near Webster, Florida. The Center cost $17.5 million. It sounds as though it is essentially a huge indoor hatchery. A visitors center will be open to the public.
  • Anyone heading for a fishing trip where wild shiners are used to catch big bass, such as Florida, needs to read this article by Hugh Crumpler. There are guides who carefully guard their techniques and then there are those who share with others in detail the tricks of the trade. I am not criticizing those who don’t share as it is the way they put food on their table but I greatly appreciate those who do. This article is an extremely detailed breakdown of shiner fishing. Hugh fishes the Stick Marsh / Farm 13 where shiners produce very big bass.
He covers in the article: where to find wild shiners, hooking the wild shiner, techniques of fishing wild shiners, how bass eat wild shiners, spawning Bass and wild shiners, setting the hook, other fish, equipment and locating shiner fishing holes. Thanks Hugh for sharing this expertise with us.

  • Lake Marion

  • If Lake Marion, Florida is on you fishing trip list as a place to catch a double digit bass, you may want to change your plans according to an article from TheLedger.com. When people who make money from a body of water are stating that there is a problem, we know there is a problem. Lake Marion used to be a very popular fishing trip destination for bass over 10 pounds. Today, fishery biologist can’t even shock up anything over 8 pounds. Should you still take a trip to Lake Marion? I suppose this is based on what you are looking for in a trip. But you certainly should not go expecting to catch a 10 pound plus bass. It is always unfortunate when a fishery declines. I am hoping that the folks in Florida can find ways to help Lake Marion get back to be a top big bass fishing trip destination.
