While the Andy Myers Lodge may have fun activities such as swimming, sunbathing, hiking, and berry picking as they advertise, that has nothing to do with why they are one of the 50 Best Fishing Lodges. Their inclusion is based on the fact that these folks are serious about their fishing. I would love to go to Andy Myers not just because it would be a great vacation but because I would also learn to become a better fisherman. They are not only trip hosts but also educators about fishing and conservation. This makes them very unique among Ontario and Quebec fishing lodges.

This entry contains the information I have learned about Andy Myers Lodge from searching the web. Fishing Traveler has received no financial or any other type of compensation for this post. The information here is accurate only to the best of my knowledge. All information should be verified with Andy Myers Lodge before booking a trip.

Eagle Lake

Andy Myers Lodge provides prime access to fishing on Eagle Lake. Eagle Lake has a real nice diversity of fish including walleye, pike, smallmouth bass and muskie. Lake trout and whitefish are also available. The lake has 63,428 surface acres of water and more than 490 islands. This is a big lake. They also have portage, fly-in and 4WD Safari access lakes.

Accommodations

They have 12 cabins. All cabins are fully furnished with private bathrooms. They provide all bed linens and towels which many fishing lodges do not provide and can save room to pack some extra fishing gear.

Boats

The lodge has excellent boats for fishing Eagle Lake. They offer 16 1/2 and 18 foot aluminum boats (as an upgrade) that are deep and wide. Motors are 25 and 40 HP. You can also bring your own boat. Their dock has electricity for battery charging.

Extras

Boats are always gassed up for you in the morning and bait buckets are always full. They will fillet, wrap and freeze your fish for you at no cost.

Guide service is available if you arrange prior to your trip.

They can arrange remote daily fly-ins to 18 remote lakes or 4WD Safari trips to other remote lakes which are available in some packages or at an additional charge.

Fishing Education

Their focus on fishing education is one of the most impressive things about Andy Myers Lodge. Many places will provide you with some introductory information such as a marked map but this is just the beginning at Andy Myers Lodge. They have an extensive fishing instruction program which includes nightly rap sessions to let you know of changing conditions or patterns.

Steve and Danny Herbeck lead the Pro Staff at the lodge. Both have extremely impressive fishing resumes. Throughout the season, many top fishing pros visit Andy Myers Lodge and provide instruction to vacationing fishermen.

Their fall trophy musky hunt looks super cool. Musky fishing pros help you try and find that fish of a lifetime. Bundle up as it can be cold but the fishing is usually pretty hot in the fall at Eagle Lake.

Fishing Videos

Packages and Rates

It is impossible to get into all of the packages that you can choose from at Andy Myers Lodge. But let’s simplify it some by stating they have American Plan and Housekeeping Plan. They also have packages that include guiding service and fly-ins. Their rates are quite reasonable when you compare the value you get here to other lodges in Ontario and Quebec.

I really like their Father & Son or Daught special. It includes American Plan lodging, one all day guided trip and one fly-in or 4WD safari. This can be done for $2339. This is a pretty sweet deal when you consider everything you get.

Location

They are located near Vermilion Bay in Northwest Ontario. The Google Map below is intended to give you an idea of their general location and does not reflect the exact destination.

Do you enjoy excellent walleye fishing? Do you enjoy targeting trophy northern pike? I know that I sure do, and Nungesser Lake is one of the best lakes not only in Ontario but in all of Canada to find this combination. Whenever I think of really big trophy northerns, I immediately think of the pictures of huge pike caught by Angler’s Kingdom guests every year. The cool thing about Angler’s Kingdom is that you will be the guest of Kevin Geary who has made his living as a lodge owner and fisherman going after the monsters. Kevin knows the tricks and tips to catch trophy pike (and walleye too). While I haven’t been there yet, everything that I hear is that a week with Kevin at Angler’s Kingdom will not only give you a great shot at catching a bunch of big fish but also give you knowledge that you can use for your trophy pike pursuits for the rest of your life.

This entry contains the information I have learned about Angler’s Kingdom from searching the web. Fishing Traveler has received no financial or any other type of compensation for this post. The information here is accurate only to the best of my knowledge. All information should be verified with Angler’s Kingdom before booking a trip.

Nungesser Lake

Nungesser Lake, just north of Red Lake, Ontario, is approximately 25 miles long with 30,000 surface acres of water. The lake has a very health walleye population. The overall northern pike fishing is very good but the trophy pike fishing can be out of this world. This is a place where the fish of a lifteime (over 45 inches) is a distinct possiblity especially with Kevin’s guidance. 90% of Angler’s Kingdom guests catch the largest pike of their lives during their stay.

Fishing Videos

Couple of very nice pike…

Accommodations

Angler’s Kingdom is a boat-in camp. In addition to the standard accmodations, they have a Satellite phone and internet.

Packages and Rates

Angler’s Kingdom offers two packages. One is a Housekeeping Plan package and the other an American Plan package. Rates for 2010 have not been posted yet on the web site but 2009 was $1025 U.S. for the Housekeeping Plan and $1250 U.S. for the American Plan. That is an excellent price for the American Plan.

While the Housekeeping Plan rate may be a little higher than some places, you need to factor two things into the value of Angler’s Kingdom. First, you are getting the adventure of a boat-in destination. I really like boat-ins as they are not as isolated as fly-ins but still get you to parts that are not easily accessible. Second, the boats look like outstanding fishing machines. They are 18-foot Lund Outfitter boats powered by 40 hp, four stroke, electric start Honda motors with power trim / tilt. They are equipped with depth finders, trolling motors, marine radios, carpeted floorboards, pedestal seats, casting decks, live well, rod and gear storage. Sure you could save a $100 or $200 somewhere else with a lesser boat. But you may not be very satisfied with your choice after you’ve been putting to your favorite spot across the lake for the last hour with your 9.9 hp 2 stroke that only starts on the third or fourth pull everytime. Cheaper isn’t always better.

Northwestern Ontario has some great fishing opportunities. One of those opportunities is located 185 miles north of Red Lake at Big Hook Wilderness Camps fly-in outpost destinations. They have a number of outpost Housekeeping Plan camps that offer pike and walleye fishing.

Northwestern Ontario has some great fishing opportunities. One of those opportunities is located 185 miles north of Red Lake at Big Hook Wilderness Camps fly-in outpost destinations. They have a number of outpost Housekeeping Plan camps that offer pike and walleye fishing.

Al Linder has spent some time there and raves about their walleye fishing.

This entry contains the information I have learned about Big Hook Wilderness Camps from searching the web. Fishing Traveler has received no financial or any other type of compensation for this post. The information here is accurate only to the best of my knowledge. All information should be verified with Big Hook Wilderness Camps before booking a trip.

Fishing

Walleye and northern pike are the targets at Big Hook Wilderness Camps. Perch and whitefish are also available in good numbers on some of their lakes.

Their lakes are located in the Opasquia Provincial Park. Here is a list of the lakes that they fish.

Burnt Lake – Northern Pike, Perch and Walleye
Central Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Cocos Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Lemonade Lake with Access to Favourable Lake – Northern Pike, Sauger and Walleye
South Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
South West Lake – Northern Pike, Perch and Walleye
West Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye

As good camps should do, they post updated fishing reports on their site.

Accommodations

At Big Hook Wilderness Camps, you will find the typical outpost cabins. What is unique is that they pre-stock your cabin with staples as part of their package such as pork and beans, canned vegetables, peaches/pears, powdered juice, jelly, onions, coffee, mustard, syrup, pancake mix, sugar, dry onion soup mix, potatoes, salt and pepper, lard or cooking oil, ketchup, scouring pads, dish washing soap, toilet paper and handi-wipes. This saves a lot of packing space and more room to bring a few extra lures.

Also, Big Hook Wilderness Camps have 16′ boats at two of their camps. When fishing with kids, this can be important.

Packages and Rates

Their rates depend on how many people are in your party. If you have 4 adults in your party, you will pay $1129 per person. The rate for children 12 years old and under (accompanied by one adult) is $829 per child.

Fly-In Weight Limits

Big Hook Wilderness Camps allows customers 100 pounds (45kgs) per person (50 pounds per child). Extra stuff can be flown in for a reasonable additonal cost.

Location

You will fly out of Red Lake Airport to start your trip to one of Big Hook Wilderness Camps’ outpost cabins. The Google Map below is intended to give you an idea of their general location and does not reflect the exact destination.

Black Bear Lodge is a drive-in but remote lodge on Northwestern Ontario’s famous Red Lake. Red Lake is a very big lake weighing in at about 43,000 acres. What makes Black Bear Lodge unique is that it is one of only two lodges at this end of the lake. If you want even more remote waters, they also have 7 portage lakes.

But please note that this remoteness comes because Black Bear Lodge is an outpost camp without running water, electricity, or toilets in the cabin. If you are into fishing though, this should not stop you as the location offers some great walleye and northern pike fishing. Lake trout are also available with the right techniques. Some muskie and smallmouth fishing can also be had.

This entry contains the information I have learned about Black Bear Lodge from searching the web. Fishing Traveler has received no financial or any other type of compensation for this post. The information here is accurate only to the best of my knowledge. All information should be verified with Black Bear Lodge before booking a trip.

Fishing

Red Lake is well know for its walleye and northern pike fishing. It is approximately 31 miles (50kms) in length. Lake trout swim in these waters also. They have several portage lakes. One portage lake has smallmouth bass and muskie. This lake has a small fee to use but the rest of the portage lakes are included in the package.

Accommodations

As noted, Black Bear Lodge is an outpost camp. So, don’t expect too many frills. They have a shower house with hot and cold water, a main lodge with water and electricity, and a fish cleaning house with water, electricity, and ice machines. The cabins do not have electric, running water, or indoor toilets. They have oil burning stoves, lanterns and foam mattresses on bunk beds.

Packages and Rates

American plan packages are your only choice here but the prices seem very reasonable. The cost is approximately $560 per week and include 16′ boats with 15hp motors. They also include 5 gallons of gas per day. Everything is included in the package except taxes, licenses and live bait.

Children 12 to 17 are $360 and under 12 are $110.

You can upgrade to 18′ boats with 25hp motors. You can also bring your own boat.

Location

Red Lake is located 250 miles north of the border. The lodge sits about 20 miles west of Red Lake, Ontario. You drive most of the way and then are taken by 4×4 vehicles a short distance to camp. The Google Map below is intended to give you an idea of their general location and does not reflect the exact destination.

Fishing

Red Lake is well known for northern pike and walleye. Lake trout, whitefish and ling can also be caught. On big lakes like Red Lake, location of the camp can be really important. They are the difference between spending most of your time fishing versus boating.

Bow Narrows Camp has a blog that will keep you posted on all of their fishing.

Accommodations

They advertise that their cottage rate includes everything including fish cleaning. I think some people underestimate this benefit. It is real nice to get back to camp and have someone else grab your stringer and carve your filets as you grab a beer.

The camp is modernized with the cabins having bathrooms with showers, kitchens and living areas. The camp supplies electricity 24 hours a day from the camp generator.

Boats are 16 footers with 20hp four stroke outboards.

Packages and Rates

They offer American Plan and Housekeeping Plan options. Their American Plan package rate is $860 Canadian. The Housekeeping Plan package is $650 Canadian per person.

Child rate for ages 7 to 12 and under is 1/2 price of the chosen package. Children 6 and under are free.

Location

They meet you at their dock and parking lot in the town of Red Lake and boat you into camp from there. The Google Map below is intended to give you an idea of their general location and does not reflect the exact destination.

Fishing

Rainy Lake is a fine multi-species fishery. At Camp Narrows Lodge, you can fish for smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike and crappie. The lodge is located on the Northwest Bay which will put you on some of the best smallmouth fishing that Rainy Lake has to offer.

Rainy Lake is good anytime you can get there but the fall can be incredible as the big smallmouth start their feeding frenzy and the crappie catches become plentiful.

Camp Narrows Lodge helps preserve their fishery with a catch and release policy on smallmouth bass. They encourage selective harvest on walleyes and pike with slot limits.

Accommodations

Eddie North’s Attawapiskat River Adventures is a brand new operation out of Nakina in Northwest Ontario. Everything I’ve heard so far is nothing short of phenomenal. You will explore an essentially untapped walleye and northern pike fishery.

This entry contains the information I learned about Eddie North’s Attawapiskat River Adventures from searching the web. Fishing Traveler has received no financial or any other type of compensation for this post. The information here is accurate only to the best of my knowledge. All information should be verified with Eddie North before booking a trip.

Fishing

The first order of business at Eddie North’s Attawapiskat River Adventures is walleye and pike fishing. But don’t think it stops there. They also offer sturgeon fishing in good numbers and excellent whitefish opportunities at the right time of year.

Now, Eddie North’s camp may not be for those of you who want to keep and bring home as much as you can. But for those of you who are like me and respect a camp that focuses on conservation practices that keep the quality of fishing for years to come, you’ll love the experience here. This camp has one of the best conservation policies in Ontario.

…I would ask that all of my friends and guests observe a 100% no kill policy on all pike. I believe this is the only way to ensure the quality of the experience. In addition proper handling of these magnificent fish is imperative. I’ve provided each boat with a landing cradle to help assist in the handling of larger fish. Please try to keep the fish in the cradle at boatside while unhooking. Wire cutters, long nosed pliers and jaw spreaders are essential tools for a quick a safe release. If the hooks are burried too deeply please utilize wire cutters to quickly cut your hooks and remove the lure. When your partner is ready with the camera quickly lift the fish for a photo being very careful to support the fish underneath as well. Vertical holds can damage internal organs! Please use a glove as well when hoisting the fish in the boat for a photo. Your grip will be enhanced and the risk of dropping these large, strong fish in the boat will be minimized. Return the fish as quickly as possible to water to be revived. If they seem particularly weak utilize the cradle until their strength has returned. If everyone uses these handling techniques it’s my hope that most of the delayed mortality caused by improper handling will be eliminated.

Eat as many walleye as you wish 18″ or under while you’re staying at the camp, but none fly out with you.

While many lodges have polices about keeping fish, few totally understand the importance of proper handling as part of good conservation. Eddie North gets it exactly right.

Fishing

Fireside Lodge is the only resort on Little Vermillion Lake. They fish 8 lakes beside Little Vermillion Lake. Some of these lakes are portage lakes. All but one of their lakes have northern pike and most have smallmouth and muskie. There are also some walleye around but they are not featured at Fireside Lodge.

They fish the following lakes:

Booger Lake – Northern Pike
Cedarbough Lake – Muskie, Northern Pike, Smallmouth and White Fish
Closs Lake – Primarily Muskie and Smallmouth
Cloudlet Lake – Muskie, Northern Pike and Smallmouth
George Lake – Northern Pike
Hooch Lake – Muskie, Northern Pike and Smallmouth
Little Vermillion Lake – - Muskie, Northern Pike, Smallmouth and White Fish
Maskinonge Lake – Muskie, Northern Pike and Smallmouth
Terry Lake – Northern Pike

The lodge puts out weekly fishing reports on their site, which is very helpful in getting an idea of the fishing possibilities. Lots of fun reading for all of us who dream of Canadian fishing trips.
