Fishing Conservation Policy

What impresses me most about Air Cochrane is there emphasis on conservation. Here’s the dirty little secret for too many fly-in outfitters in Northern Ontario. Many operators have packed 12 to 14 weeks of fishing parties of 6 or more fishermen onto small remote lakes and not cared one bit about how many or what size of fish their customers kept. The outffitter is happy as long as the cash is flowing. The problem is even in these great fisheries of the north, the resource is not limitless. These lakes often get fished out and at best are only able to recycle good fishing every few years and at worst become completely ruined.

Whenever you book a fly-in, you want to always ask these two questions.
1) How many people have fished the lake in the last 5 years?
2) What is your policy for keeping fish?

At Air Cochrane, you don’t need to ask. They proudly share their conversation policies. First, they only allow 6 parties per year at each of their outposts. I can’t imagine that is the best business model but it certainly helps to preserve their fisheries.

Second, no pike or brook trout can be kept. Only two walleye under 18 inches may be kept for immediate consumption. Now, you might be someone who likes to bring some fish home. There is nothing wrong with that and there are many places listed on Fishing Traveler that will allow you to do that. But you have to respect Air Cochrane’s commitment to keep their waters in goood health for years to come.

Finally as further evidence of their commitment to conservation, they will provide you with landing cradles and barbless single hooks for all of your lures.

Lake Listing for Air Cochrane

Air Cochrane currently lists the following lakes as fishing options. They open and close lakes as the conditions demand. So, you should check with them directly for more details of availability of lakes.

Audrey Lake - Brook Trout, Northern Pike and Walleye
Border Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Brailey Lake – Northern Pike, Perch, Walleye and Whitefish
Edgar Lake – Trophy Northern Pike and Walleye
Floodwood Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
French Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Haultain Lake – Northern Pike
Little Detour Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Magiskan Lake – Northern Pike and Sturgeon
Maurice Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Mikwam Lake – Northern Pike, Sturegon and Walleye
Moose Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Nettogami River (2 Outposts) – Northern Pike, Perch and Walleye
Sand Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Snare Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Today Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Twopeak Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Unknown Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye
Verena Lake – Broot Trout, Northern Pike and Walleye
Yesterday Lake – Northern Pike and Walleye

Air Cochrane is also associated with the Kesagami Wilderness Lodge.

Rates

As with all outfitters, their prices vary depending on the lake you choose. Current listed rates range from $830 to $1270 for a 7 day trip. They allow you to choose from 3 to 7 day trips.

My second favorite thing about Air Cochrane are their family package rates. I have so much appreciation for outfitters who invest in the next generation of fishermen by providing discounts to families. All children (15 and under) are 50% off. Older teens (16 to 19) and spouses are 25% off.

Fly-in Baggage Limits

Air Cochrane allows customers 80 pounds (37kgs) per person. Extra stuff can be flown in for a reasonable additonal cost.

Fishing Tackle

Air Cochrane’s web site suggests for walleye that you plan to bring bucktail jigs. For northern pike, they suggest spoons in the Darredevil and Johnson Silver Minnow variety. I’m sure a conversation with them with help you further refine your tackle list.

Feature Fishing Trip Reports

June 2010 Nettogami Island by Apthorpes Fishing and Hunting Adventures

Fishing Videos

Other Stuff

Air Cochrane can accomodate corporate fly-ins on their Yesterday Lake, Nettogami River and Edgar Lake outposts. I sure wish my company would plan a corporate retreat with Air Cochrane.

Location

Air Cochrane is located in Northeast Ontario in Cochrane which is north of Timmins.

Review Air Cochrane

If you have fished with Air Cochrane, please take a moment and review your stay. If this is your first time leaving a review, please take a moment to review our guidelines.

Fishing Traveler Most Resourceful Web Site Award

I have to start this post by acknowledging that Air Ivanhoe wins the award for web site resources. They put so much detail on the site. Everything you need from flight instructions (don’t touch the propeller!) to a detailed list of fishing tackle is on their site. It is truly impressive and most outfitters have a lot to learn from Air Ivanhoe on how to build a web site.

Fly-In Lake Listings for Air Ivanhoe

A lot of outfitters claim to be constantly opening new outposts but Air Ivanhoe means it. In 2009, they opened up 5 new fly-in outposts.

Email from Air Ivanhoe

I recieved a very informative email from Joel Theirault from Air Ivanhoe. Here is what he had to say…

Theriault Aviation Services (TAS) was founded in the early 50′s by George Theriault Sr. When the Air Base was set up at Ivanhoe lake and operated by George Theriault Jr., a new corporate identify of Air Ivanhoe Ltd. (AIL) was created in 1980. In 1981, Joel Theriault was born, as a third generation tourism outfitter carrying on the Theriault tradition of providing high quality remote based tourism experiences in Northern Ontario. Joel is an environmental lawyer and a bush pilot, and continues to work with the Theriault family.

Air Ivanhoe operates a Drive In Lodge (Ivanhoe River Inn), a Fly in Lodge (www.nemegosenda.com), boat in outpost cabins, and fly in outpost cabins. All trips begin and finish at the Ivanhoe River Inn and guests can reach this lodge via paved roads. The lvanhoe River Inn is located 4.5 hours by vehicle to the northeast of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontariol or 8 hours from Toronto, Ontario.

Air Ivanhoe owns and operates approximately 40 fly in outpost cabins, and offers approximately 25 on an annual basis. One of the tools used by Air Ivanhoe to maintain an extremely high quality fishery is camp rotation of fishing lakes. The primary species of fish are Pike, Walleye, Perch, Smallmouth Bass, Whitefish, Cisco, Lake Trout, Brook Trout, Splake, and Rainbow Trout. Air Ivanhoe also offers moose hunting, bear hunting, and small game (partridge, rabbits, ducks, and geese) hunting.

There aren’t many places in the world more beautiful than the Killarney Wilderness Park. Combine this natural beauty with great fishing and you have yourself the making of a prime fishing destination. Bear Lake Wilderness Camp offers you access to Killarney Wilderness Park’s excellent fishing and beautiful scenery.

BLWC is a boat-in camp offering fishermen many lakes to fish from. You can fish on the chain of main lakes and enjoy yourself, but the best fishing is found on their many portage lakes. Smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, pike and panfish are the top targets for fishermen. Walleye are available on the main lakes but in limited quantity. That said, they do catch a number of trophy walleye every year. Lake trout and brook trout are also available.

This entry contains the information I have learned about Bear Lake Wilderness Camp from searching the web. Fishing Traveler has received no financial or any other type of compensation for this post. The information here is accurate only to the best of my knowledge. All information should be verified with Bear Lake Wilderness Camp before booking a trip.

Fishing

I have already described the fishing in the introduction but want to emphasize that the best fishing at BLWC is on the portage lakes. There are some people who go there and only fish the main chain of lakes but I don’t recommend this plan unless you are a only targeting trophy fish. You just won’t find the numbers on the main lakes that you’ll find on the portage lakes.

They have about 25 lakes that have boat or canoe caches. Some of these lakes you do need to hire a guide for the first time in order not to get lost. We didn’t do that and caught a lot of fish. I do know someone who did this and the fishing was out of this world on a lake stuffed with largemouth bass.

Even some of the easily accessible portage lakes can be phenomenal, especially if you are a bass chaser. You can see our full trip report to Bear Lake Wilderness Camp here. We just scratched the surface of the fishing potential at this camp.

From a dad’s perspective, this is a great camp to take children to due to the combination of adventure of a boat-in and number of fish you can catch. Both of my sons caught their largest bass ever on this trip.

I recently had a conversation with someone who called the bass fishing unbeleiveable but was disappointed about the walleye fishing at Bear Lake. So let me emphasize that it is my opinion that this is not the place to go to chase walleyes in numbers. They do catch a number of trophy walleye every year on the chain of main lakes. I would guess if you really focused you could find some nice fish during a week’s stay. We didn’t target walleye. So, I can’t comment too much on the walleye fishing from personal experience. I just know what I have read and heard from others.

Lake trout, perch and bluegill are available. They also have a brook trout lake if that fits your interest.

Fishing Video

Here is an overview of what Bear Lake Wilderness Camp offers.

Accommodations

Bear Lake Wilderness Camp is a boat-in camp. BLWC is not totally isolated and there are other cabins on the main lakes but don’t let this bother you as there is not a lot of fishing pressure here. I think we saw one other boat during the week that was not associated with the camp.

The cabins are typical for a boat-in camp. They have electric which works on a generator that shuts down overnight. They have running water for drinking. You will have to use an outhouse which really isn’t that big of a deal.

Packages and Rates

BLWC offers a Housekeeping Plan package. The rates on their site are still from 2009 but will run adults about $700 per person. Kids under 14 are just $150 each. You do need to pay an extra $90 for your portage motor for the week.

They offer a pike and walleye special for late May into the end of June for approximately $500.

Fishing

The Spanish River is a very rich fishery with lots of diversity. The main focus of their fishing is on walleye, smallmouth bass and northern pike. They have a good population of perch, crappie and panfish. Largemouth bass, catfish, rainbow trout, salmon, muskie and sturgeon also swim in these waters.

You can access the North Channel of Lake Huron just a few miles from the resort.

Accommodations

I have been told that the cottages are very comfortable and clean. The cottages have a 4-piece bathrooms and kitchen with appliances. They offer free wireless internet.

Packages and Rates

Rates are based on the cottage that you choose to rent. For an example, their cottage 7B, which has 3 bedrooms and houses 6 people, costs $1100 in Canadian Funds. They have cabins for couples to groups of 12 people.

Boat rentals are additional. They have standard fishing boats available as well as a pontoon boat.

Location

Blue Heron Resort is very convenient and only 1 mile from Highway 17. The town of Spanish, Ontario is only 4 miles away. The Google Map below is intended to give you an idea of their general location and does not reflect the exact destination.

Fishing

You can either fish the Whalesback Channel of Lake Huron or the Spanish River. Fishing is mostly for walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass and jumbo perch. Sturgeon, salmon and trout can also be caught. Guides can be arranged by the resort for you.

Accommodations

Brennan Harbour Resort has cabins of various sizes. Their largest cabins will hold up to 7 people. Cabins have everything that you need for a your Housekeeping Plan vacation.

They have a range of boats in their fleet. I am very impressed with their upgrade boats. 17′ Lund Outfitters with a 30hp 4 stroke or even a Lund Rebel with a 40hp 4 stroke could be your vessel for the week. The resort’s fleet of boats demonstrates their commitment to making sure fishermen maximize their fishing with quality boats.

Packages and Rates

They offer a range of packages from Housekeeping Plans to full American Plans. Their weekly Housekeeping Plan package rate is $545 per person. They offer two American Plan options. The first provides dinner only and costs $665 per person. Their full American Plan package with breakfast and lunch costs $795 per person. These are very reasonable rates.

They also have some very reasonable family rates. This is really important to me. Lodges like Brennan Harbour Resort understand that making fishing affordable for dads and moms to take their kids on fishing vacations is critically important to preserving our sport.

Everybody gets to be part of a midweek fish fry which sounds fun.

Fishing

Horwood Lake has northern pike, whitefish, perch and walleye.

They also offer ATV guided trips to catch and release back lakes.

Accommodations

They have 8 cabins from 1 to 3 bedrooms. Cabins have 3 piece bathrooms and fully equipped kitchens.

I like when lodges pay attention to their boat fleets. At Horwood Lake Lodge, they offer 16′ Mirro-Craft open flat floored designed, with high-backed swivel seats, depth-finders, aerated live-wells, running lights, bilge pumps and powered by a 20 HP Yamaha, 4 stroke engine. Nice boats make fishing more pleasurable.

Packages and Rates

Horwood Lake Lodge offers American Plan and Housekeeping Plan packages.
