Black Bear Lodge is a drive-in but remote lodge on Northwestern Ontario’s famous Red Lake. Red Lake is a very big lake weighing in at about 43,000 acres. What makes Black Bear Lodge unique is that it is one of only two lodges at this end of the lake. If you want even more remote waters, they also have 7 portage lakes.
But please note that this remoteness comes because Black Bear Lodge is an outpost camp without running water, electricity, or toilets in the cabin. If you are into fishing though, this should not stop you as the location offers some great walleye and northern pike fishing. Lake trout are also available with the right techniques. Some muskie and smallmouth fishing can also be had.
This entry contains the information I have learned about Black Bear Lodge from searching the web. Fishing Traveler has received no financial or any other type of compensation for this post. Fishing
Red Lake is well know for its walleye and northern pike fishing. It is approximately 31 miles (50kms) in length. Lake trout swim in these waters also. They have several portage lakes. One portage lake has smallmouth bass and muskie. This lake has a small fee to use but the rest of the portage lakes are included in the package.
Accommodations
As noted, Black Bear Lodge is an outpost camp. So, don’t expect too many frills. They have a shower house with hot and cold water, a main lodge with water and electricity, and a fish cleaning house with water, electricity, and ice machines. The cabins do not have electric, running water, or indoor toilets. They have oil burning stoves, lanterns and foam mattresses on bunk beds.
Packages and Rates
American plan packages are your only choice here but the prices seem very reasonable. The cost is approximately $560 per week and include 16′ boats with 15hp motors. They also include 5 gallons of gas per day. Everything is included in the package except taxes, licenses and live bait.
Children 12 to 17 are $360 and under 12 are $110.
You can upgrade to 18′ boats with 25hp motors. You can also bring your own boat.
Location
Red Lake is located 250 miles north of the border. The lodge sits about 20 miles west of Red Lake, Ontario. You drive most of the way and then are taken by 4×4 vehicles a short distance to camp. The Google Map below is intended to give you an idea of their general location and does not reflect the exact destination.

It is going on 6 years for me, I can’t get enough and highly recommend this trip for those who need to get away and decompress. The best feature for me, my cell phone doesn’t work there and they don’t have a phone!!!
The company is great, the owners and frequent visitors draw a friendly crowd of folks who are eager to help the novices and share techniques between the experts.
The scenery is fantastic, purple and orange sunsets, northern lights, mile high skies, clear waters, trees, beaver, moose, all the wild life you can imagine. Get it now while it lasts, this place is still innocent and the camp owners respect it.
Oh – and the fishing is fantastic too…
Red Lake is absolutely an incredible area to fish and Black Bear offers a great overall experience. Tasty family style meals are included and you will not find a better value. The owners are also extremely nice folks but expect to pitch in couple of times with trivial KP duty chores like setting up for meals or cleaning up dishes. The drive is not for the faint of heart and the camp albeit accommodating is not for the pampered fisher-person but I cannot think of a better way to get back in touch with nature while enjoying some incredible fishing, friends and unbelievable untouched Canadian shield lake scenery.
