Let the Controversy Start - World Record Smallmouth Bass Claim

Every so often, there is a story about a new world record fish.  This one comes from one of my favorite places in the world, Ontario, Canada.  Steven Grail claims to have caught a 12lb. 4 oz. smallmouth bass on the upper Madawaska River.  This beats the current 10lb. 14 oz. record, pictured below, caught in Tennessee in 1969.  Oh yeah, what did he do with the potentially world record bass?  He ate it.  Yep, you read that right.  He ate it.  Here’s a link to the story from the Ottawa Citizen

I’m no expert at guessing weights of fish, and his smallmouth sure looks like a nice fish.  But, I don’t think it is a 12lb. fish.  He states that the fish was 22 inches long with a 24 inch girth.  I’ll let you be the judge but I just don’t think so.  Did I mention that he ate it?

I agree. The fish is undoubtedly a nice one, but doesn’t look to be 12 lbs. It is extremely difficult to guess weight based on a photo however. If you’re wanting to be credited with a world record, it’s best to go through some certifiable procedures. Or…we could just do away with fish records, slap the guy on the back for his nice catch, and ask him how such a nice bass tasted. Take care,
